Description
Black Gum tree, This one is another personal favorite of mine actually, I believe it is one of the most unrated trees there are, and it is even a native one! This tree can get medium to large size. They are so beautiful. They get all kinds of colors in the fall from red to purple and multiple colors all at once! They do get very small berries once they get older but are very small and wildlife such as birds love to consume them. Black gum usually are not found with really thick canopy’s so usually grass and other plants will have no problem growing under them. Anyone that had the room, should have a black gum tree! Sometimes this tree is confused with the "sweet gum" tree but that is a totally different species. One of the most attractive native trees around. Summer leaves are dark green with a high-gloss appearance, but the most spectacular part of this tree is the fall foliage with many shades of yellow, orange, bright red, purple or scarlet that may appear on the same branch. Bark matures to medium gray and resembles alligator hide. The fruit is bluish-black and is loved by many birds. Makes a strong specimen tree. Grows 30'-50' high, with a 20'-30' spread. Prefers well-drained, acid soils, and full sun to partial shade. The black gum is also one of the longest living trees with a typical lifespan of around 700 years!
