Pine bark is the most widely available and most commonly used mulch for acid-loving plants, and for good reason. It's naturally acidic, with a pH typically between 4.0 and 5.0. It breaks down slowly — a fresh application of pine bark will last 2 to 3 years before needing significant refreshing. It's coarse enough to allow water to penetrate easily rather than shedding it like a fine-textured mulch can. And it's widely available at garden centers in both nugget and mini-nugget sizes. Pine bark nuggets are better for established plantings where you want long-lasting coverage. Pine bark fines or mini-nuggets break down faster and are better for working into the soil as an amendment at planting time.

Pine needles are another excellent option, particularly if you have access to them in quantity. They're naturally acidic, they interlock as they settle to form a mat that suppresses weeds effectively, and they allow water to pass through easily. They break down more quickly than pine bark, so they need to be refreshed more often — typically annually — but they're free if you have pine trees on your property and they're one of the most traditional mulch materials for blueberries in regions where they're grown commercially.

Wood chips from coniferous trees — pine, spruce, fir — are a good option if you have access to them through a tree service or your own property. They're coarser than bark mulch, break down more slowly, and provide excellent long-term soil structure improvement as they decompose. Avoid wood chips from hardwood trees, which tend to be more neutral to slightly alkaline in pH and can raise soil pH over time rather than lowering it.

Orchid bark — the coarse, chunky bark sold for orchid potting mixes — is one of the best options for both mulching and soil amendment for blueberries. Mulch Materials to Avoid for Acid-Loving Plants

How Deep to Apply Mulch and Where to Place It
